The Wheatley Society and the local branch of the Royal British Legion plan a multi-year marking of the centenary of The Great War. Of the 181 village men who served, thirty-six (20) were killed, a strikingly high proportion. Planning is under way for several initiatives:

All will be remembered individually in an illustrated commemorative book, with input from local historians and printed by a local firm.

The Wheatley First World War Centenary Project <br/><br/>The Wheatley Society and the local branch of the Royal British Legion plan a multi-year marking of the centenary of The Great War. Planning is under way for several initiatives: <br/><br/> All will be remembered individually in an illustrated commemorative book, with input from local historians and printed by a local firm. <br/><br/> An exhibition for which some of the material is already available will reinforce public awareness in our community. <br/><br/> The Memorial Garden will be enhanced with a new stone inscribed They are not forgotten 2014. <br/><br/> The crumbling commemorative tablets on the church porch for each man lost will be restored. <br/><br/> Our closeness to Oxford will greatly assist mounting quality public lectures throughout the period 2014-18, for older and younger alike. <br/><br/> A community-based drama will be staged in 2015. <br/><br/> It is hoped that parades and other events will take place, based on our schools, churches, halls and the Wheatley Detachment of the Oxfordshire Army Cadet Force. <br/><br/> Wheatley's inhabitants will be encouraged to place fresh text and photographs on the existing Village Archive's living history' website www.wheatleyarchive.co.uk .
